A DREAM of creating a cleaner Callington by a local resident has become a reality thanks to the town’s community spirit.
Callington Volunteer Litter Pick Group was set up to tackle the rising issue of litter in the town and after its first pick in January this year was hailed a great success after the team of 15 volunteers amassed 45 sacks of rubbish in two-hours.
Joint-organiser Mikkie Raphael, who came up with the idea for the group, along with Callington Cllr Andrew Long, have been delighted at the town’s willingness to support this venture and have shown ‘amazing community spirit’.
Mikkie said he knew something had to be done to tackle the rubbish so set up a Facebook page — Callington Volunteer Litter Pick — to form a group to clean the streets in and around the town: ‘It was an idea I had after I walked through the town and thought that something had to be done.
‘Last week was our third litter pick and we had over 15 different volunteers over the three picks which is amazing. Plus we collected 20 bags of rubbish which took our collection to 125 bags that we have cleared so far.
‘It was heart warming to see so many people turn up to help make their town a better place to live in.
‘The people in Callington have been so supportive and we have received great feedback. The local businesses have been so invaluable and so has Cllr Andrew Long and the town council — the community spirit has been amazing.
‘If anyone wants to take part we cater for all abilities and all ages and you are welcome to bring your dog.’
Cllr Andrew Long said: ‘It was great to get the third litter pick under way and people are really noticing the difference across the parish. It is great to see the public taking action to help themselves and I am particularly pleased for Mikkie Raphael as it has been his dream of creating a cleaner town that has led to this.’
All abilities are welcome to volunteer at the litter picks and all the equipment needed is provided, plus with the added bonus of a hot drink and a pasty, sponsored by Ginsters, after the events.
The next picks will be: July 22, August 26 and September 30.
