CORNWALL councillor for Callington Andrew Long has called on Cornwall Highways to re-think its strategy for gritting in the town this winter, after it was revealed that the main street and access to the health centre is not considered a priority.
Cllr Long was reacting to confirmation from the regional engineer for Eastern Cornwall that the only roads within the town that will be gritted automatically when the weather gets colder, will be the A388, the Southern Road by-pass, Tavistock Road, and the A390.
'Last winter we suffered from serious problems in the Liskeard Road/Fore Street/Haye Road area where access to the health centre was almost impossible on some days due to ice on the access roads,' he said.
'We need to deal with this urgently to avoid a repeat performance this winter.'
'I would like to see a revision to the schedule for Callington to include Fore Street up to the junction with Liskeard Road, and then down Haye Road to the entrance to the health centre. This would provide a relatively safe route to access the vital services that the health centre provides for the community.
Cllr Long is asking for an urgent meeting to discuss access issues to the health centre.
