A SMALL businesses in Tavistock which has been solving computer issues for the past three years is appealing for volunteers to ensure its survival.

Tavistock Computers and Training Ltd is a not-for profit shop that gives free advice and assistance when needed, and gives tuition to senior generations to help them get online and become computer active.

Tavistock resident Janet Mashford has run the shop and provided training by herself, with her husband Michael as the shop's accountant and director.

This year has been difficult for Janet with illness and two deaths in the family.

Janet said she felt she was letting people down when she was not able to keep the service going at full strength — and appealed for volunteers to help run this valuable service.

'It's vital we keep going,' said Janet: 'But there is only so much I can do, I wish I can do it all but there is no way round it — I'm 60 and I can't do it alone.'

One of Janet's visitors is 86 years old and thanks to Janet has learnt how to Skype to family abroad, and even do the food shopping online.

'If they don't understand what service provider to choose, they come and ask and I help them in a manner they can understand and they come back time and time again.

'We have been very grateful to people who have supported the project by choosing to buy their new laptops from us. Also to people who have donated unwanted laptop computers and other items — in turn we have been able to use parts, revitalise others and raise the funds needed.'

Currently the shop is only open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm.

Janet said: 'If we are unable to find people to help at the shop, we will have to close the shop completely and probably go mobile at the end of December 2013.

'All I need is someone to do a day or two, they don't need to be a mini-me or the new me, I just need someone who is reliable and good with people. Training and support will be given to suitable applicants.'

People who want to know more can contact the shop at 5 Eastend Stores, by calling the shop on 01822 612292 or after 3pm on 01822 618865.
