I HEARTILY agree with our American visitor (Letters, August 1 )who was so disappointed by the sight of the former over 60s rest room.

As a regular shopper in Tavistock I have observed the steady decline of an architecturally attractive facade and well lit and busy interior into a seedy, run-down, empty building right in the centre of the town's high street. Surely it is time for West Devon Borough Council to issue an enforcement notice to the owner to use it or relinquish it? What is the problem?

Three years ago there was a planning application which proposed a most unpopular development. I believe that it is the duty of the council to inform us of the situation through the columns of this newspaper as well as to take action to restore the building to its former well kept condition. The best outcome would be for it to revert once again to its original use. This encouraged older people to come to Tavistock and shop.

THE letter from Mr?George Moore expressed the feelings of everyone in?Tavistock as we have had to see the much loved rest room left to the state it has beome in the centre of our town. A sad statement of how it was allowed to be removed from the people of Tavistock.
