TAVISTOCK has experienced its lowest temperature for at least five years, according to local weather expert David Thomas. Mr Thomas, who measures rainfall and records temperatures from his garden in Violet Lane, said the lowest minimum temperature was -8 degrees centigrade (18 degrees fahrenheit ) on December 29, the day snow fell, and the lowest maximum temperature on a day was +1 degree centigrade (34F) on December 28. In the last five years Tavistock has yet to have a maximum temperature that stays below freezing all day. The total rainfall for the year was 50.08 inches, compared with 55.24 inches in 2004. The wettest single day was November 5 when 1.94" of rain fell. October was the wettest single month with 8.74" of rain and the driest month was February (1.55"). July 11 was the hottest day of the year when the town experienced a maximum temperature of 29C (84F) and every day between July 10 and 14 the maximum temperature was above 26.5. The hottest day in Tavistock since 2000 was Saturday August 9 2003 when 31C was recorded (88F.)
