Tavistock Ladies 2

St Agnes Ladies 1

TAVISTOCK'S first league match of the season opened with Susannah Boulle, Laura Stapleton and Emma White making strong tackles and feeding the ball around the pitch.

With some players playing out of position, Tavistock had to cover every angle of the pitch and Babs Horton and Fiona Dunn were keen not to let any player into the D.

When Lisa Butler came onto the pitch, the game turned around slightly as she worked with Steph Mills and fed the ball to the running play of Jo Gaspar and Laura Armstrong.

The ball went from Mills to Butler who listened to the call from Armstrong and slotted the ball past the keeper with a hefty strike.

St Agnes tried to make a new line of attack on the left but this was to no avail as Kath Collar and Claire Jackson wore them down every time.

Tavistock had a couple of short corners against them but with the early call from Jemma Hunt, goalkeeper, they were quickly cleared.

In the second half, St Agnes attacked through the middle. A short corner was awarded to them from which they scored. Tavistock went on the attack with strong balls fed from Collar and Mills to allow the forwards a stronger attack. With only 11 minutes to go, the ball came from Mills to White who fed it to a waiting Gaspar, who slipped it easily past the keeper.

Tavistock then played a defensive game, and this worked perfectly as the opposition never came past the 25 yard line with any threat of a strong attack.

This week Tavistock are at home (Bickleigh Barracks) to United Services with a 12.30pm start.

Player of the match: Lisa Butler.
