A SPECTACULAR series of arts workshops and events takes place next week in Drewsteignton.
The Drewe Arms will host the evening events for the Dartmoor Arts Project Summer School, a packed programme of talks, performance, live music and screenings from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. All events start at 8pm unless stated otherwise
Dartmoor Arts Project is an artist-led organisation founded in 2006. They host the busy summer school, as well as a year-round programme of events and artists' talks, bringing excellent speakers to Drewsteignton.
Alongside the evening sessions, there are daytime courses in photography, animation, earth arts, landscape painting and much more running throughout the week.
The summer school launches with talks by artist Marcus Vergette and architect Jerry Tate on Sunday, July 22 at 7.30pm. Marcus will be talking about his ongoing Time and Tide Bell project, and Jerry will discuss ways of using nature as an inspiration for design.
On Monday, July 23, artist and co-founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize Paul Thomas will be talking about aspects of contemporary drawing. The following day, the pub hosts an illustrated talk by Siân Ede.
Siân is the director of arts at the Gulbenkian Foundation in the UK. She has initiated a ground-breaking arts and science programme there, encouraging artists from all art forms to engage with science and technology. There will be a presentation, followed by an open discussion session.
Storytelling is the focus of events on Wednesday, July 25. Stephen Park will provide some comedic relief, Wilf Merttens will share some entertaining stories, and Dartmoor Arts storytelling students will put on live performances after three days of rehearsals.
Thursday, July 26 will see a presentation by Paul Harrison. As half of a duo with John Wood, they create videos showing dead-pan comedic antics.
Young British artist Phoebe Unwin gives a talk on Friday, July 27. Her work has recently been exhibited in Saatchi's Newspeak and the British Art Show 7.
The final night of the week's events sees live music from AJ Holmes and the Hackney Empire, bringing their unique brand of afro pop.
The evening events cost £5 each, and are free to those attending the summer school classes. There is no need to book in advance, but spaces do fill up fast so arrive early.
