TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club?s week began with a visit by the Devon County Ladies Bowling Association president, Janet Thomas, and her team selected from various clubs across Devon. The five rink match against Tavistock men ended in a convincing 113-77 win for the visiting ladies after they won three of the rinks played. Tavistock skip, Ron Cooper and his team of John Smith, Brian Ellicott and Gordon Northey, were 17-4 up at the 15th end and survived a come-back by the ladies to win 20-15. Skip Norman Paramor and his squad of Vic Stacey, Albert Townsend and Ray Meneer won 20-14 after their opposition won only three ends in the second half of the game. Tavistock?s losing skips were Roy Northam (17-29), Mike Allen (7-29) and Der Saunders (13-26). The ladies? section concluded their season with a visit to North Tawton for a friendly three rink triples match which ended as a 49-31 victory for the Tavistock Ladies after they won on all three rinks. Skip Betty Browse and team of Viv Powell-Thomas and Marlene Paramor, won 14-13, while skip Marion Allen led her team of Joan Northey and Val Southern to a 21-6 victory. Skip Henny Bawden aided by her crew of Diana Smirles and Shirley Blackburn won their close encounter 14-12. The mixed triples home match against Torpoint ended as a decisive 116-87 victory for Tavistock, winning four of the six rinks played. Skip Marion Allen and her squad of Barry Chappell and Ray Meneer won 33-7 after restricting their opposition to scoring on only five of the 18 ends. Skip John Smith and crew of Shirley Blackburn and Wallace Northey achieved a similar victory when winning 23-7. Skip Norman Paramor and team of Yvonne Meneer and Marlene Paramor won 22-13, while skip Der Saunders and squad of Diana Smirles and Gordon Northey won 18-12. Tavistock?s losing skips were Ernie Piper (11-26) and Vic Stacey (9-22). On Friday a team of six mixed rinks travelled to Liskeard for a match which ended in a 134-100 defeat for the travellers. Skip Ernie Piper and his squad of Clifford Hicks and Jenny Aldridge won 23-21, while skip Vic Stacey led his crew of Diana Smirles and Gordon Northey to an 18-13 victory. Club captain, Norman Paramor and team of Freda Isaac and Brian Ellicott drew 20-20, but skips Roy Northam (15-20), Der Saunders (16-22) and John Smith (8-38) all tasted defeat. The week ended with a trip to Bideford for a game which Tavistock won 84-81, thanks to a good win by skip Roy Northam and squad of Brian Preece, Wallace Northey and Bill Ashe. Skip Der Saunders led his crew of Barry Chappell, Walter Meek and Stuart Doidge to a one shot 19-18 victory, while skip Ron Cooper and team of Ernie Piper, Bob Powell-Thomas and Gordon Northey went down 20-22 despite picking up eight shots in the lst quarter of their game. Skip Norman Paramor and team of Vic Stacey, Brian Ellicott and Ray Meneer had a similar fate, when after scoring ten shots in the last third of their game they lost 15-25. The highly successful 2005 season will end on Saturday with the traditional ?Lady Captain?s Team versus Men?s Captain?s team? match at 2pm. Spectators are welcome and club members are invited to stay on after the match for tea and the presentation of awards to all club competition winners.
