TAVISTOCK Athletic Club members attended four races earlier this month – including the Duchy 20 mile race and marathon near Redruth.
TAC marathon runner Ray Bennett was among the 202 competitors on the start-line and once again Ray excelled, finishing in 4 hours 13 minutes 37 seconds, earning him second place in his 70 plus age group.
Three TAC runners competed in the 20-mile run. Tony Symons was first home in fourth position overall and second in his M45 age category in a time of 2.06.28. Martyn Williams, who is training for the London marathon, had a time of 2.47.13, with John Marshall in 2.58.08.
Kirk England was the only runner representing the club at the Grizzly. The race, organised by Axe Valley Runners, is advertised as 'twentyish muddy, hilly, boggy, beachy miles'. Kirk, completed the course in an superb 3.59.49.
Eight TAC runners entered the Bideford Half Marathon. Club coach Tim Brooks was first club member home. Andy Houghton gained a PB and Richard Windermer, next home, took four minutes off his previous race time. There were PBs from Hazel Walker, Jane Carroll. Claire Pitcher and Tracy Windermer.
TAC times were: Tim Brooks 1.36.35, Andy Houghton 1.43.07, Richard Windermer 1.43.34, Hazel Walker 1.55.03, Claire Pitcher 1.57.23, Tracy Windermer 2.03.57, Lucie Luke 2.12.03, Jane Carroll 2.29.48.
The club athlete of the month for February is Trevor Williams. His commitment to both his personal training and to coaching at the club makes him an inspirational TAC member.
* The Tavy 13 Half Marathon, takes place at 10am on April 18. Race numbers are now in excess of 400, with all profits going towards TAC's commitment to part-fund the new athletics track at Tavistock College.
