TWENTY-year-old Georgina Geikie, from South Tawton, has been representing England in the fifth Commonwealth Shooting Federation Games in Melbourne, Australia, and narrowly missed getting into the Olympic final of the women?s air pistol event. Her score of 370 out of a possible 400 was the same as the girl above her in the qualifying stage, but Georgina?s last string of ten shots gave her a score of 88 compared with the other girl?s 93 and pushed her into ninth place - only eight go into the Olympic final to shoot for the medals. Earlier in the championships, Georgina had been paired with the other Englishwoman, Julia Lydall, in the pairs event, and the couple came fifth behind Australia, India, Malaysia and Canada. Both also took part in the badge matches, which are regarded as a warm-up for the full events, and Georgina was well ahead of her compatriot, finishing in fifth place. Georgina said she found the championships ? which are the forerunners of the full Commonwealth Games next year in Australia ? particularly exhausting this time, as she is also studying at Cardiff University and keeping up with her work via the internet and e-mail while at the event. She is returning to university before going on to Estonia next month for another international match, following training in Switzerland and ?Intershoot? in Holland earlier this year. She is a regular member of Okehampton Smallbore Club, who gave her invaluable support with training facilities.
