KOUNTRY Kit, an outdoor equipment shop in Tavistock, has closed its doors for the final time after 30 years of trading.
The Kountry Kit Outdoor Shop, located on West Street, suddenly announced its closure at the end of last week by putting a sign in the store’s window on Friday (November 18).
The sign read: ‘Kountry Kit has closed its doors for the last time. After 30 years in business we would like to thank you for all your custom, sharing your stories and allowing us to kit you out for all of your adventures. It has been a pleasure getting to know all of our customers and trade for 30 years in the beautiful town of Tavistock.’
Kountry Kit was an outdoor activities and equipment shop which was first established in 1986.
The family run business offered a service which relied on expert knowledge of the outdoors as well as a diverse range of stock.
During its 30 years of trade the store had kitted out many Tavistock residents with gear to assist their adventurous activities. Many who wished to go trekking on the moors, or travel abroad, would visit the store to get advice and buy the correct equipment.
People took to Facebook to express their views regarding the shop’s closure.
One woman said that it was a shame that another ‘good shop’ in Tavistock had closed, and another commented it was a great loss because the shop offered ‘experience and knowledge you just don’t get in chain stores.’
One gentleman wrote: ‘Devastating news for all the staff. I’ve been a customer since 1989 when I joined the Tavistock section of Dartmoor Rescue as a 19-year-old, and over the years they have really helped getting in specific kit that I’ve needed for expeditions. 2016 just doesn’t seem to be working properly can we re-boot it?’
The store owner was approached for comment but did not wish to say anything on the matter at this time.
