A SMALL section of Tavistock town centre could soon receive a revamp if a planning application gets the go ahead by West Devon Borough Council.

The application submitted at the end of last month could see the demolition of Shoe King with replacement new-build retail premises, including an extension to the rear elevation and change of use of residential maisonettes to retail from 51 to 55 Brook Street.

The applicant is Taunton Land Ltd, with Parkes Lees Architects Ltd as the agent.

In the report, agent Mark Kemp said: ‘The proposal is [for] demolition of existing retail premises on 51 to 52 Brook Street with replacement of new build retail premises and enlargement of 53 to 55 Brook Street retail, including change of use of residential maisonette to retail units and extension to the rear elevation of Market Road.’

For the new build, the agent has said that the design will be a single storey and will retain the appearance of a two-storey facade through the ‘incorporation of a storey height feature parapet wall at first floor level’.

‘The proposal for 53 to 55 Brook Street includes the change of use of the maisonette units into retail — following this, it is proposed to adapt the existing internal arrangement to provide a more even distribution of floor area between the two retail units [Superdrug and M&Co].

‘Additionally, a new-build service core with goods lift, escape stair and staff WC per unit is proposed to the rear elevation on Market Road.’

Comments on this application are due by Thursday, July 19. The council’s target determination date is August 15.
