A GROUP of men in red shirts was recently seen digging holes in the grass surrounding Tavistock Parish Church — luckily it was nothing untoward, merely members of the town's Lions club planting 2,000 crocus and miniature narcissi bulbs.
The bulbs were being planted in memory of Roger Collins, who was president of the club in 2000-2001 and who died in January of this year.
Roger's family had decided that the money from the collection at his memorial service should go to the Lions club and with his wife Sue's agreement, some of the money was used to purchase a new red marquee for Lions' activities.
With the money left over and as Roger had been very much involved with the daffodil planting around the town, it was decided, with permission of the churchwardens, to purchase the bulbs and plant them in the churchyard.
The crocuses are purple in colour while the narcissi are mainly yellow, which means that the planting has almost followed the Lions International colours of blue and yellow.
