YOUNGSTERS in Okehampton will be able to discover bugs and butterflies in their natural habitat at the next event in the Okehampton Wildlife Watch Group programme.

As part of a slow walk around Old Town Park taking place between 2-4pm, on Saturday, August 7, there will be a chance to age a tree, look for dung beetles, discover a boggy area with all its interesting wildlife and play outdoor games. Sturdy footwear and all weather clothing are essential, meet at Castle car park.

The group held its inaugural meeting earlier this month at Okehampton Youth Hostel. More than 20 children attended and enjoyed getting involved in scavenger hunts and mask-making.

The group welcomes children aged between 8-11 years old who are interested in wildlife, the environment, walks in the woods, getting muddy and having fun.

Other forthcoming monthly events planned include the chance to discover the wildlife in hedges, take a guided natural history walk at Meldon, partake in a family workshop using natural dyes at Roadford Lake and a winter crafts and bird food session at the Ockment Centre.
