Plymouth and West Devon Combination Senior Division Buckland MC 3 Plymouth City 2 ON a fine afternoon but on a heavy pitch two teams reproduced a close encounter and again the victor's honours went to Buckland. Buckland took the initiative but again their neat football from the back was often wasted as they failed to find anything like an end product. Indeed it was City, who in virtually their first noteworthy attack on the 15 minute mark, claimed the opening goal. A neat interplay by the Citizens' front men played in John Walker who had 'spirited' himself in behind the Buckland defence and he clinically finished off the move. City extended their lead 15 minutes later and again it was Johnnie Walker – making it a double. He directed a shot, which appeared to be going over, towards the Buckland goal. Remi Holland, who has been in excellent form this season, parried it but the ball bounced over the line. To Buckland's credit they kept battling and from a goal mouth melee, Russell Ellis, in a typically combative mood, forced a shot through a sea of legs into the City goal. Rejuvenated, Buckland forced the play in attempt to score the equaliser and five minutes from the end of the first half, centre half Anthony Goodwin powered a shot into the City goal. The second half started with Buckland going for the win. Plymouth City continued to play with the 'high' back line chasing risky off sides and were almost penalised on several occasions. Each time the Buckland forwards, Ellis and James Coole in particular, failed to make the most of the opportunities. The goal did come however on the hour mark. A curling 25 yard free kick, by Dan Brockington, deceived City's keeper Jim Wilkinson to give Buckland the advantage. The game fizzled out after that as tiredness bought about by the heavy pitch took its toll on the players. Plymouth tried to wrest victory away from Buckland but their efforts were contained by the resilient defence of Goodwin, Creber and Orchard. Victory extended Buckland's run to four in a row. This game saw the end of a long career in local football as the mercurial Greg Ramsden hung up his boots to seek pastures new in Cyprus.
