FIREFIGHTERS from Yelverton have praised the generosity of shoppers, after they raised more than £2,500 for the US firefighters' fund during a collection at Tescos in Roborough last Saturday.

Sub-officer John German said the shoppers' response was 'brilliant'.

'They couldn't put enough in. We had two people write cheques out there and then,' he said.

Mr German said it took several hours to count the donations, which finally totalled £2,536.57. The appeal fund is for the families of the New York firefighters who died following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre three weeks ago.

And Bere Alston firefighters braved appalling weather last Sunday to complete their nine-mile sponsored run around the Bere Peninsula to raise money for the American firecrews.

The wet and soggy runners raised more than £500, with more donations to come.

'Even in the rain people came out and we actually collected £150 just on the way round,' said firefighter Colin Shaw.
