ONLY three weeks after the road from Bere Alston to Plymouth via Denham Bridge was re-opened following extensive repairs to the bridge, the road was once more closed last Sunday.
The initial closure occurred after a lorry hit the Grade II Listed bridge, taking out a three metre section of the stone parapet.
The subsequent road closure, which forced many residents to take long detours, led to calls for improved signage from residents, who said lorries should not be allowed on the road.
Devon County Council, however, said the width restriction signs were adequate.
The closure on Sunday was the result of the bridge being hit once again, this time by an unknown vehicle, and one corner of the bridge damaged. The road was reopened in the evening.
A county council spokesman said: 'The incident seems to have happened on Saturday afternoon but no witnesses have come forward. The damage is fairly minor and it will be possible to undertake the repairs without closing the bridge or causing disruption to traffic.'
If anyone has information relating to the incident they should notify the police or Devon County Council bridge maintenance section.
