A CHARITY event for the armed forces was deemed a ?huge success? last Sunday when £1,136 was raised. The ?Big Brew Up? event in aid of the Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Association (SSAFA) was held at Tavistock Pannier Market. More than 200 people flocked there to show their support. During the afternoon the cadets from 2312 Tavistock ATC, based at Crelake Barracks, showed off their skills, and TUBES, Tavistock Versatile Brass Ensemble, performed. Another spectacular sight was the 28ins square cake which was donated by Jackie and Ken Nunn, and made by Steve at the Cake Shop on West Street. Caroline Day, a long-time supporter of SSAFA and one of the organisers of the event, said: ?It was more of a success than we could have ever dreamed of. ?We are so pleased. We had no idea how many people would come and it was wonderful to see the room fill up. ?The charity is such a diverse one and they really are for the welfare of the families of the services.? SSAFA is one of the leading national charities committed to helping and supporting those who serve and have served in the armed forces, and for their families. In attendance was Tavistock mayor Anne Johnson and West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox. Mr Cox expressed his gratitude for the work of SSAFA: ?As a child, SSAFA would look after me when travelling to join my parents who were posted abroad. ?I well remember the kindness and care of those volunteers and I know that all the families of armed forces personnel are grateful for their immensely important work.? Organisers expressed thanks to Jackie and Ken Nunn, Morrison?s for the tea, coffee and cakes, and the many other business for their donations. They also expressed thanks to market reeves Eddie Carruthers, Mike Souttar, and to Paul Dorrington for making the event possible.
