Whitchurch v Chagford

ON a sunny afternoon, Whitchurch entertained league leaders Chagford. Whitchurch were fielding their strongest side of the season with Frank Bray and Pip Mansfield returning to the first team.

Skipper Chappell won the toss and invited Chagford to bat first. With Lavis (2-40) and Mansfield bowling well in tandem, backed up by Whitchurch?s finest fielding performance of the season, runs were hard to come by.

On his return, Bray bowled superbly well and was unlucky only to end up with 3-45 from his 12 overs.

The only innings of note for Chagford was their skipper, Joshi, who made a faultless 71 before being bowled by fast bowler, Elliott. Chagford ended up 184-7 from their 46 overs.

In reply, Whitchurch?s form batsmen Rotton, Gray and Chappell were all back in the clubhouse with the score only on 15.

It was again left to Hall (36) to steady the ship and he did this with up and coming teenager Stokes, who made a glorious 70.

When Hall departed, Clapham (47) joined Stokes and they almost finished the job off.

But they both fell late on and it was left to Bray to strike the winning runs in the last over.

Whitchurch won by 4 wickets, taking 18 points and Chagford 7.

This Saturday, Whitchurch take their unbeaten start to the season to local rivals,Yelverton.
