IN her role of Tavistock town mayor, Cllr Jenny Metcalf, president of the Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club, declared the club bowling green open on Saturday. She then started the season off by bowling the first wood of the year. The mayor then stayed to watch over 40 club members taking part in a friendly bowling match, before enjoying a tea provided by the ladies of the club. In her address to members Cllr Metcalf praised the club for maintaining such a high standard and wished them good fortune in the coming season. Club members attending were able to view the fixture list for the forthcoming season and noted that the club will be involved in some 76 men?s and mixed matches, 34 ladies? only games, plus club, league and county level, team and individual competitions. Members will be called upon to fulfil away fixtures as far away as Teignmouth, Barnstaple, Looe and Wadebridge. The club will offer two public open days on Sundays April 30 and May 7, when members of the public are invited to come along and try the game, cost free, with tuition available. The club will also be holding its open tournament on Sunday June 11, when over 20 teams from around Devon and Cornwall will compete for prize money, thanks to sponsorship from local businesses. Members of the public are invited to watch any of the matches cost free.
