Yelverton v Clyst St George
YELVERTON won the toss and asked Clyst to bat in overcast conditions at Langton Park. Yelverton made a breakthrough in the second over, dismissing opener Dubuisson for nought, caught one-handed by C Miles in the gully off J Degg.
Clyst went for their shots and the next wicket did not fall until the score was 45, the wicket taker again Degg, with Holmes the catcher.
The introduction of Pearson accounted for Anning and Coe but Clyst rallied with a partnership of 58 between Cook and Thomas. Tom Trevarthen, aged 15, making his debut in the second team, ended the partnership with the score on 156 and accounted for Mitchell.
From 156 for 5 with 10 overs to bat, Clyst slumped to 185 all out with Degg and Rundle knocking over the tail for under 30 runs.
Midway through their innings it looked as though Clyst would score 200+, but good bowling and fielding kept the score respectable.
Yelverton's response initially started brightly with Degg taking consecutive boundaries off Clyst's opening bowler, Hutchings.
After the dismissal of Degg, C Taylor and I Pring batted sensibly but found quick runs hard to come by as Clyst bowler Takle kept the runrate down.
Taylor perished for 44 as he attempted to hit Cook over the top and Alex Trevarthen — twin brother of bowler Tom and also making his debut in the second team — was caught at deep square leg sweeping.
Alex Lampe joined Pring in the middle and they upped the scoring rate in a partnership of 52 for the fourth wicket.
After the dismissal of Pring, caught at square leg hooking, Miles went second ball and Lampe followed 14 runs later.
With 22 runs to win, seventh wicket pair Rundle and Pearson needed to score 27 runs off 9 overs, but in the fading light the Clyst bowlers held their nerve and Yelverton closed on 166-7.
