CHEQUES for £250 have been presented to two local causes by Okehampton Bowling Club.
The money was raised by a bowls competition between the clubs and pubs within the town and from green fees which have been put aside for charitable uses.
Because there had been no donations for a couple of years the club was able to present two cheques. The first was to Mike Macklin, of Okehampton Rotary Club, to go towards the Rotary's ShelterBox Appeal, and the second to Oliver Hancox, who has been raising money for Cancer Research in memory of his late father, Neil, who owned DIY Supplies in Okehampton.
As part of his fundraising effort Oliver sailed his small yacht from Plymouth to France single-handedly and the club congratulated him on his efforts.
The idea of the bowling competition was also to encourage people to become full time members of the club. Any new members will be welcome when the club opens for the 2011 season in April.
The cheques were presented at the end of season get together where competition winners through the season were presented with their trophies. They were: Mrs A Hardwick, P Southcott and D Vernon (mixed triples), Mrs P Jones and A Mathias (mixed pairs), T Hellyer and D Vernon (men's pairs), P Weeks (non-winners cup), Ayley (Tilley 2 wood), B Vernon (over 60s cup, A J Newcombe cup and Simmons championship), R Pederick, Jack Vanstone (Hutchings handicap), Pam Jones (ladies' championship.)
