THE Cavitron Fund, a charity supporting Derriford Hospital's internationally respected neuro surgery unit, has been given a boost of more than £450 by staff at West Devon Borough Council.
A giant cheque for £452.09 was presented to Michael Turner, Cavitron's chief executive, by borough personnel manager Catherine Milton and West Devon mayor Cllr Robin Pike.
Staff and councillors raised the money through donations in lieu of Christmas cards and a raffle at the staff Christmas party. Cllr Pike also donated money from a whiskey draw held in December.
Mr Turner said the money would help pay for the high-tech equipment required by the neuro surgery department, now the most advanced unit in the country.
He said the unit treats many people from the West Devon area and has strong links with the borough, as several of Derriford's top brain surgeons live here.
Cllr Pike said: 'We think it is very important to support the work of another public sector organisation which carries out such valuable work for everyone.'
