A £4,000 grant from West Devon Borough Council's village hall grant scheme is set to boost community life in Whitchurch.

The village hall has been awarded the money to help fund much needed renovations such as easier access for the disabled, and to make interior improvements.

The money will also go towards providing visitors with safer access to the hall by building a new footpath and bridge.

More than £33,000 has been committed to village halls across West Devon through the grant scheme so far this year.

In addition to the village hall scheme, the council runs a number of other grant schemes, including community projects, sports development, economic development and regeneration grants, and arts grants, all of which have proved to be a huge help to communities who want to maintain, improve or even bring in new facilities to their area.

Cllr Chris Jenkins, chairman of the environment and community committee said: 'Village halls are an essential part of the fabric of community life, providing key services, facilities, and a meeting place for local people.

'This project will ensure that Whitchurch village hall is more accessible to all, and make the hall more appealing to existing and new users alike.

'These grants are often crucial to the success of a project. Our own resources are very scarce but we have set aside just a little money because we are determined to do what we can to help our local communities.'
