ATTRACTIVE displays of flowers about the town greatly improve its image in the eyes of visitors, believes Tavistock Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber's annual floral competition, Tavistock in Bloom, judged last week, helped to highlight these visual delights by attracting an excellent standard of entries.
The judges particularly noted the high quality gardens and displays on the routes into town and in the vistas around the town. Those judges who had the pleasure of picking the best contributions were Tavistock mayor, Norma Woodcock; retailers' representative, Mrs Jenny McDowell; Lions Club representative, Mrs Janet Nowell and president of the chamber of commerce, Neil Woolcock.
The winner of the Plymouth Sound Salver for best display on frontages, baskets and polanters was Dartmoor Photographic; the John and Pat Warne Tankard for best group display including small enclosure, mini garden or set-pieces went to the Blacksmith's Arms.
The Tavistock Gas and Stove Centre won the Chamber of Commerce Cup for best use of space available. Kilworthy Kapers won the Tavistock Radio Taxis Rose Bowl for best shop window display.
A new prize has been awarded to Tavistock Primary School for their collective efforts in improving the school ground with the use of recyclable materials and plants.
Mrs Woodcock has donated the award, and will be presenting the trophy to the school.
