A TAVISTOCK couple celebrated a golden day with a splendid party for family and friends last Friday. Rupert and Marlene Horrell were married 50 years ago in the Congregational Church in Tavistock, which has since been demolished to make way for the Pearl Assurance building in Duke Street. Marlene met Rupert on a blind date at a dance in Buckland Monachorum ? following the couple?s wedding three years later, they farmed for many years at Kelly, before retiring and coming to live in Tavistock. The couple have two children, Amanda, who lives with her husband Michael in Callington, and Kevin who lives in Bedfordshire. Around 100 guests, including two of Marlene?s bridesmaids and Rupert?s best man, enjoyed their anniversary party in Tavistock Town Hall and made donations to Tavistock Area Support Services and the Children?s Hospice South West in lieu of presents. Marlene said everyone had a ?wonderful? evening and paid tribute to town hall staff and Jane?s Cakes who made the event so enjoyable. Marlene, who also holds a weekly craft stall in Tavistock Pannier Market, said a big ?thank you? for the flowers she was presented with in the market on the actual day of her anniversary. Marlene said she and Rupert were very pleased to be able to give £250 to TASS and the hospice. ?We thought it would be a nice idea to support something locally ? and we didn?t want presents at our age!? said Marlene.
