AN intense car fire at Whiddon Down caused traffic chaos on Saturday while firefighters from Okehampton and Chagford tackled the flames.

Breathing apparatus had to be used by the crews during the incident, which occurred at around 11am outside the Post Inn.

Okehampton firefighter Ian Donovan said: 'It was quite an intense fire and the road was quite busy — we had to hold up the traffic for a good half hour.'

No-one was hurt in the blaze.

Crews from Okehampton and North Tawton also attended an incident at the District Hospital in Okehampton the previous day.

The fire, which started in a dishwasher, was not serious and no-one was injured during the incident.
