THE A388 from Callington to Launceston was blocked for four hours near Kelly Bray last Friday when a trailer load of straw caught fire. Two fire crews from Callington were joined by crews from Launceston and Saltash as they fought to extinguish the blaze in ten tonnes of straw being transported by tractor and trailer. The tractor driver managed to remove the tractor to safety. The fire started at 3.30pm and the road was closed until 7.30pm. The straw and trailer were destroyed. The cause of the blaze is being investigated but Callington fire chief Kevin Rookley said it was thought someone had thrown a lighted cigarette into the straw. Crews from Callington and Tavistock also fought a fire involving ten acres of wheat at South Petherwin the previous day.
