THE Plough and Share Credit Union in Okehampton attracted a visit from representatives of a Kenyan church recently. The Rt Rev Julius Wanyoike, the bishop of Thika, and Peterson Karanja, director of the Thika Community Development Trust, visited the credit union with the venerable Christopher Futcher, archdeacon of Exeter, to find out more about the similarities between the Thika Community Development Trust and Britain's credit unions. Mr Karanja said: 'The credit union is a very major empowering tool to the community. 'In Kenya and the UK alike, there are those who can't access financial services, and are perpetually hooked into poverty. 'This is one way of freeing those people. Savings provide a form of self worth, and provide personal and financial freedom, offering great peace of mind.' The pair were in the country for the installation of Exeter's new bishop, the Rt Revd Robert Atwell, on Saturday, July 5.
