A WEST Devon clergyman has been appointed as a prebendary of Exeter Cathedral by the Rt Rev Michael Langrish, the Bishop of Exeter.

The Rev Nick Shutt will become one of 26 prebendaries in the College of Canons in Exeter Diocese who share general oversight of the cathedral and its life together with the dean and chapter.

Mr Shutt will continue in his role as rector of West Dartmoor Benefice, looking after the parishes of Yelverton, Meavy, Sheepstor, Princetown and Walkhampton.

He said: 'I am humbled and honoured by this appointment which came completely out of the blue. I received a letter from the Bishop inviting me to become a Prebendary a few weeks ago.

'It will mean that I will be involved in the life of the cathedral from time to time and I understand I am required to preach at least once a year by arrangement with the dean.'

Mr Shutt will be installed as a prebendary at a service at Exeter Cathedral later in the year.
