ANOTHER big clean up of the Okement Rivers in Okehampton took place recently with everything from parts of bicycles and road signs to cans and crisp packets dredged from the river.

Members of the Okehampton Rivers Improvement Group plus town councillors and army cadets all got involved in the clean up and Waitrose provided their skip for the rubbish.

The low river levels meant a lot was taken out on this occasion.

Great efforts have been made by the rivers group to improve these town assets over the last two years and make them more accessible to the public ? this has been achieved through various enhancement schemes funded by the local authorities and clearing the river banks of vegetation.

Town mayor Christine Marsh, who heads the group, said despite making people more aware of the rivers and their beauty the problem of rubbish was not not diminishing.

?The rubbish situation is not really improving and I would appeal to people to use the litter bins which are scattered around, particularly in the area of Waitrose,? she said. ?I am really pleased with how the clean-up went and the people who got involved, but we need to keep it tidy and that depends on all of us who live and work here.?
