TAVISTOCK's millennium ball went with a swing last Saturday — and raised a magnificent sum for charity into the bargain.

More than 170 people danced the night away at the ball in Tavistock Town Hall.

Music was provided by the 19-piece Mercer Evans Big Band led by trombonist Tony Evans and featuring the vocal talents of Linda Evans.

Providing a contrast, local band the Blitz rounded off the evening with a medley of 60s hits.

David Glover, of Tavistock Rotary Club, one of the event organisers, said: 'As far as we were concerned, we got as many people in as we could — it was great, and the two bands were terrific.'

Mr Glover paid tribute to the generosity of the Bedford Hotel during the evening.

'We would have been able to give just in excess of £500 to charity — their £800 made a significant difference to Devon Air Ambulance.'
