WHEN it comes to showing appreciation for the work of the Tavistock Stroke Club one member will go to any lengths.

Jan Demery, who lives in the town, joined the club, which is based at the Tavistock Area Support Service at the Anchorage Centre, in 2005 after suffering from a stroke.

Such has been the support she has received Jan wanted to show her gratitude by raising money for them by undertaking a sponsored swim.

So Jan, 64, decided to take the plunge with 'Stroke for Stroke', a sponsored swim at Meadowlands pool which takes place at 11.30am on Saturday, August 24. She plans to do a quarter of a mile or 16 lengths of the pool.

She is appealing to Times readers to make a donation to Tavistock Stroke Club.

After she had a stroke she had to undergo three operations and spent four months in hospital.

Jan said: 'I wanted to give something back to Tavistock Stroke Club for the wonderful support they have given me.

'When you have a stroke they help you how to cope and encourage you socially. The club is a place where everybody is in the same boat and people support each other. It is nice to know they are there.'

This is not the first time Jan has raised money for a charitable cause after having her stroke.

For three years she took part in the Race for Life on behalf of Cancer Research. The first year she did it in a wheelchair, the second, one half in the wheelchair and one half walking and the third walking.

A sponsorship form or collected donations are available at Meadowlands Leisure Centre, Tavistock .
