INTERCLUB match play has been foremost at Okehampton Golf Club this week, with Allen Deakin (club captain) leading out his team to play the first round of the Palairet Cup at Dawlish Warren on Sunday against Tiverton. There was some excellent golf played and the result was very close with a 4-3 win in Tiverton's favour. Keith Harkness and Harry Hawkins and Dave Bickle and Barry Down were the two victorious pairs, though John Mansell and Chris Hurley, Martin Cox and Phil Martin and Malcolm Hooper and Del Owen all put up a good fight, the Tiverton teams came out on top. The Ladies' Presidents Trophy team had their first fixture of their 2008 campaign playing away at Tiverton on Friday. This was a promising start with Penny Deakin, Mo Huggins and Pam Jarman all playing very well to win their matches. Lin Atkinson, Cherry James (captain) and Jane Warren lost but Kath Mansell had a fighting finish to halve her match, making the result a 3 1/2 draw. A good result for an 'away' match. On Saturday, a three-ball two to count stableford was played. Winning Division One were Del Owen, Graham Moysey and Andy Kirby with 83 points. Second were John Mansell, Martin Cox and Dave Wooldridge with 80 points and third were Terry Steer, Evan Rees and Ted Boswell with 77 points. Division two was won by Robin Webb, John Gillard and Andy Parry 77 points, second were Mike Lang, Steve Gregory and Kevin Harding 76 points and third were George and Cherry James and Eddie Moriarty 75 points. The Ladies' Wednesday competition was a foursome stableford incorporating the lady veterans Killard Levy qualifyer. Winning the overall competition and qualifying to represent Okehampton in the Devon County Lady Veterans Golfing Association at Honiton in September were Jane Warren and Cherry James with 37 points, second with 34 points were Kath Manselland Kay King and third were Mo Huggins and Trisha Nilsson.
