POLICE are warning West Devon pensioners to be on their guard, after a bogus leafleting campaign which has been carried out in Cornwall.
A leaflet which has been delivered to homes in Cornwall purports to come from Age Concern.
The leaflet says grants of £150 are available from the charity and requests people to give their national insurance number, enabling them to receive the grant.
But Age Concern development officer for Cornwall Mandy Smith says Age Concern has nothing to do with the leaflet and is warning pensioners who receive one to report it to Age Concern or the police.
She said the worry is that pensioners could be conned into giving personal details about bank accounts and other financial information to the bogus leaflet distributors.
PC Angie Frost, crime reduction officer based at Okehampton, said police were concerned the bogus leaflets could soon be distributed in West Devon and warned pensioners in the area to ignore them and tell police if they have been sent one.
