A GOODWILL gesture of £300 has been awarded to Tavistock's town crier for his participation in an international competition. David Turner and his consort Rosemary Turner were delighted with the news that Tavistock Town Council decided at the full council meeting on September 9 to contribute to a journey to Bermuda next year. At a recent competition, Mr and Mrs Turner met the town crier for Hamilton in Bermuda Edwards Christopher, who invited them to visit Bermuda for a competition in April 2015. The competition will also mark the 200th anniversary of the transition of the capital to its present location. Mr and Mrs Turner approached the town council for financial assistance in attending the event. At the full council meeting last Tuesday (September 9), councillors agreed that £300 be awarded to Mr and Mrs Turner, towards the cost of the journey. Cllr John Sheldon said: 'He is a representative of the town and does a good job. He doesn't ask a lot so we should give him something back.' Cllr Brian Trew said: 'He deserves this — he represents us and gets nothing for it and I think this is highly appropriate.' Cllr Philip Sanders said: 'I would like to say that the current town crier and consort are the best that I have known and they are dedicated to their role.' After the meeting, Mr Turner said: 'We had already committed ourselves to going before hearing the news, but their willingness to assist financially really does put the seal of approval on our endeavours, and we are extremely grateful to them. 'We have been overwhelmed by the kind wishes and messages of support from so many people around the town — and beyond. We really do feel that we shall be representing Tavistock and its citizens at this event.'
