A QUIZ team which included members from Bere Alston has scooped £25,000 after pitting their general knowledge against some of the greatest minds in the country.

Bere Heads battled against five of the greatest quiz players in Britain when they took part in the hit BBC 2 TV show, Eggheads.

The show, which was aired on Monday night (February 2) saw Bere Heads, made up of captain Mick Parker, formerly of Bere Ferrers and wife Louise Parker, who was on reserve, and team mates John Lang from Hooe, Malcolm Medhurst, Andrew (Jim) Medhurst and Ed Hannon from Bere Alston, win the grand total of £25,000.

The show is played in five rounds. The first four are each on a specific category while the final round is general knowledge.

Members of Bere Heads play in a handicap quiz each week at The Edgcumbe Hotel in Bere Alston — and the decision to audition for the TV show was an idea they were all interested in.

The team sent in a CD instead of going through the audition process and they were selected by the producers for filming in June 2008.

Malcolm Medhurst said: 'The first round was won by my son in the music category, then we won on sport, lost on geography, and won on film and TV.

'Then it was general knowledge. As we had won three on the individual rounds it meant we had four people going on to the general knowledge round.

'We were absolutely over the moon when we won as we all thought we didn't have a chance.

'We did our homework before but when we got there they had brought in a new Egghead who was very strong and we didn't think we could win.

'I think this was the eighth time a challenging team had won and it was the first time the new Egghead had lost.

'We are absolutely delighted.'

The prize money was split between the lucky team members.
