MEMBERS of the Okehampton branch of the Devon Beekeepers Association were a-buzz with talk about a new scientific innovation after being invited to a meeting of their colleagues in the Holsworthy area.

The Okehampton beekeeping branch usually meets in South Zeal each month or during the summer at various apiaries, but they recently received an invitation to Holsworthy Community College for a meeting presenting a new product which might be of help to all beekeepers.

Mr Clive Newitt travelled from West Sussex to give a presentation on Exomite Apis, a powder developed by scientists at Southampton University which can assist with the increasingly essential control of varroa mite.

The mite is responsible for decimating many apiaries.

The combined meeting provided Mr Newitt with a full house and concluded with a lengthy question and answer session that also provided the opportunity to inspect the methods of using the product at close quarters.
