THE chance to make the record books by escaping from Dartmoor Prison is once again on offer this year — and all for the best possible cause.
The 19th Dartmoor Jailbreak is looking for teams of two or more people to raise money for charity while 'on the run' from the prison — or, more accurately, from the Prison Officers' Club, from where they will be released.
The 2001 Jailbreak was hit by the foot and mouth epidemic, raising £26,800 against £75,000 in 2000. Entries so far this year have been slower — possibly, organisers feel, due to a reluctance to fly as an aftermath of September 11.
Teams have from 12 to 96 hours 'on the run' and although they must not pay for transport themselves, the escape route can be pre-arranged, free tickets obtained or transport funded by other people.
Those breaking old records or creating new ones can win a place in the Book of Records. Teams should wear prison gear or other disguise — and must keep within the law!
The event is organised to raise funds for the Vranch House School and Centre for children with cerebral palsy or physical difficulties, and will help buy equipment such as walking and communication aids. The school has 25 children aged 2 to 12 and treats a further 1,400 outpatients aged up to 17.
Competitors — who must be over 16 — do have the option of donating 50 per cent of the money they raise to another charity.
