SOMETHING for everyone — that's the aim of the Golden Jubilee Summer Party in Tavistock, arranged by the Lions Club in association with the town council.

The day has been packed full of events and the Lions this week released the final programme for June 3.

Lions spokesman Steve Grummitt said the club hopes Golden Jubilee day will provide 'long and happy memories of a very unique celebration'.

The programme of events starts at midday, signalled by the release of a flare from the town's viaduct, fired by the mayor of Tavistock.

At the same time, the bells of St Eustachius Church will peal for some 20 minutes, along with many other churches throughout the country.

A children's funfair will be held in the Guildhall car park from 10am until early evening, while Bedford Square will be the setting for an open air disco roadshow, run by the two resident DJs from the Crown Leisure Centre.

Inside the town hall, visitors can view a 1950s house exhibition, featuring a display of room settings using furniture and household items from the early years of the Queen's reign, while music from the era will be played to enhance the 1950s mood.

At the same time, Lions members will be manning the town hall bar and serving ploughman's lunches.

Steve said: 'Between 1pm and 1.30pm, there will be a unique opportunity to join in one of the largest massed performances ever, when BBC Music Live stages its musical beacon and invites everybody to join in the singing of "All You Need is Love".

'If you want to be part of this unique experience, go down to Bedford Square and join in with the rest of the country.'

The musical theme continues with a concert by the Stannary Brass Band in Bedford Square at 2.30pm, followed by an address by the mayor and inter-denominational service of thanksgiving, led by Preb John Rawlings, Vicar of Tavistock.

An antiques and craft fair will be held in the pannier market throughout the afternoon, with cream teas being served in a 'palm court' tea room area, accompanied by live music from the 50s era.

'From 4pm there will be more live music in the square featuring local bands — this will continue until around 7pm,' said Steve.

The celebrations continue into the evening, when a 20ft high jubilee beacon will be lit by the mayor on Whitchurch Down.

Steve said beacons will be lit all over the country, starting in Scotland and Northern Ireland at 9.30pm, followed by England and Wales at 9.45pm.

'It's Tavistock's turn at 10pm,' said Steve, who said the final beacon will be lit by the Queen in the Mall, London at 10.45pm.

The jubilee celebrations will finish with a firework display near the beacon, accompanied by music from the Tavistock Town Band Ensemble — after the display, the Tavistock Cricket Club will be open for refreshments.
