Be clear before you take to the roads police tell motorists

WEST Devon motorists are being warned by police to take simple precautions before taking to the roads.

With the recent cold weather and a forecast of more to come Devon and Cornwall Police are warning drivers not to take to the roads without simple preparations.

Chief inspector Chris Booty said: 'Drivers must ensure they have all round visibility before they set off — peering through a hole in the frost whilst waiting for the windscreen to clear is not acceptable and could lead to prosecution.

'Glass and lights should be clear and clean so that you can see and be seen. Always remember to use dipped headlights in reduced visibility and leave plenty of room between yourself and the vehicle in front.

'Not every road is treated by gritters, but wherever you are it's safer to assume the road has not been treated and drive accordingly. In extreme weather ask yourself if your journey is really necessary.

'Devon and Cornwall Police try to encourage everyone to drive safely but for the few that ignore that message — the courts are waiting!'
