FROM the moment the first short of a length delivery of the afternoon skidded through and hit the Ordulph opening batsman?s ankle, it was obvious this match was going to be more of a battle against the wicket than the opposition. This proved to be just the case with the wicket breaking up with almost every delivery. Good use of the ball and conditions by the Bude opening bowlers Metherall (2 for 14) and Brookes (3 for 23) put the Ordulph top order in all sorts of trouble with wickets falling regularly. Only Makhija (12) and Churchill (10) managed to get into double figures. The middle order faired no better with a procession of wickets falling in quick time to the spin of Baker (2 for 31) and Hobbs (3 for 37), with only M I Wheeler putting up any resistance with his customary bludgeoning 13 off six deliveries. With less than than 50 on the board and eight wickets down, the Ordulph looked in dire trouble with defeat looming. An excellent tail end stand however of 50 between the ?old guard? of Folley (26) and Smith (19) with some thoughtful sensible batting took the Ordulph score to 100 all out after 19 overs. Given the state of the wicket this was considered a reasonable total and more than had earlier looked likely. Defending such a small total the Ordulph knew they had to bowl exceptionally well and that is exactly what happened. What was to come was a two man show by Makhija and Westlake who bowled a tremendous spell of accurate thoughtful deliveries. A sign of what was to come was seen with the first ball of the innings where Westlake removed the leg stump of Bude opener Burcombe. Makhija made the most of the wicket by taking three more wickets in a three-over spell. The Bude batsmen had no answer to the onslaught. Not a single Bude batsman got into double figures as the Ordulph two completed the demolition in style and bowled out the whole Bude team in less than 14 overs for a mere 27 runs. Makhija produced outstanding figures of 6 for 3 off 6 (two of the three runs being wides) and was on a hat trick ball on two occasions. Westlake finished also with exceptional figures of 3 for 12 off 7. Such was the total domination by the two bowlers that out of the Bude total of 27 runs only 12 came from the bat and six of their batsmen finished with ducks. Good tight fielding by the Ordulph also helped with catches for Churchill and Folley and an excellent low catch from Freddie Wheeler. Man of the match, Ordulph: N Makhija.
