IN the first half too many wrong options were taken, however, one player did rise above the mediocrity. Andrew Barwick showed his fellow forwards what was required with some storming runs which took Tavistock to within striking distance of the Newquay line.
Prop Darren Sutton was the first forward to pick up his game in support of Barwick and was prominent, especially stealing ball at the lineout.
Newquay with the wind at their backs camped deep in the Tavistock half but their only reward was a penalty goal as the defence, in which Richard Morris and James Radford were prominent, held firm.
The second half saw Tavistock struggling for continuity but as a regular supply of possession was available from Stuart Blake in the lineout they put on the pressure. The Newquay defence held firm and Tavistock were restricted to two long range penalties from skipper Josh Sutton both of which drifted wide.
Success came when centre Doug Lloyd cut back inside from a scissors movement. The forwards quickly recycled the ball to fly half Josh Sutton who passed to Paul Harwood. He released wing Rob Williams who scored in the corner. The try was excellently converted from the touchline by Seb Roberts.
Newquay conceded a number of penalties close to their line. Initially Tavistock went for the catch and drive from the lineout, but when this tactic failed took a tap penalty and Hamish Pearce-Danker crashed over to score.
The final score came when Doug Lloyd chased a speculative kick, caught the ball on the bounce and sprinted in to score.
Man of the match: Andrew Barwick.
