Devon seconds XI D
Whitchurch seconds v Cockington
WHITCHURCH seconds suffered another heavy defeat — this time to Cockington on home turf. Coming into the match the visitors were behind Whitchurch in the league and the home team were hoping to notch their first win of the season — it was not to be.
Batting first Cockington were rarely in trouble. Jarman (79) and Evans (97) shared a second wicket stand of 160 runs with only home man of the match Billy Barriball (0 for 31) gaining any control.
33 boundaries on the small Whitchurch House field meant that there was not too much running but the score mounted alarmingly. Matters were made worse when Charlie Barriball broke his finger leaving Whitchurch with a man short in the field. There was to be no respite when Evans was lbw to Powell missing out on a well earned century. Chamberlain (57) and Furze (30) took advantage of some ragged bowling and Cockington declared eight overs early with a commanding total of 321.
Whitchurch's reply was dominated by a scintillating century by Billy Barriball. It was Cockington's turn to suffer a fusillade of boundaries as the wooden fence was clattered no fewer than 25 times as Billy amassed a total of 129.
With only Andy Alford (28) offering any sort of help Billy found himself running out of partners. No one else made double figures. When Jarman (6-22) came onto bowl only Barriball was able to cope. The end was inevitable when taking one risk too many he was out to a fine catch in the deep.
n On Saturday Whitchurch firsts are at home to Feniton; the seconds are away to Chagford; on Sunday there is a family six-a-side competition celebrating Steve Hodge's 25 years with the club; on Monday the U11's are home to Ivybridge, U15s away to Tavistock; Thursday evening friendly against Elephant's Nest.
