FIREFIGHTERS were called to a well-alight barn fire in Lewdown last week, involving almost 300 bales of hay. The incident started at 11.45am on Tuesday, September 25 on a single storey barn, approximately 30 metres by 15 metres, at Thorn Farm in Lewdown. Two crews from Tavistock and the water foam carrier from Exeter attended and on arrival the firefighters immediately requested the attendance of a third pump, from Launceston, and a hose layer, from Tavistock, for assistance. One third of the barn, 160 large square bales of hay and 100 round bales of hay were destroyed by the fire and two thirds of the barn was saved. At 7pm the fire was out. The cause of the blaze was not thought to be suspicious.
