THERE has been a curious end to the curious tale of the Tavistock Carnival banner reported in last week's Times.

The banner was securely fastened to railings near the roundabout at Abbey Garage but on Saturday night before the carnival it was stolen.

Tavistock Lions secretary Chris Northey said at the time it would have been too difficult to get it down for a prank and of no earthly use to anyone else.

However, on Tuesday lunch-time a sharp-eyed woman using the tip spotted the large PVC banner half-hidden in a pile at the Crowndale Recycling Centre.

Tip contractor Dave Marish said he knew it was there but did not realise what it was until it was pointed out to him.

'It was lucky it wasn't lost forever,' he said.
