THE unfamiliar sounds of African drumming reverberated through the classrooms of Mount House on Saturday as more than 50 children from all over West Devon flocked in to Mount House School Pre-prep for a fun-filled activity morning. The main attraction ? an African Drumming workshop in the School?s Wortham Hall ? turned out to be even better than expected. The four-person troupe ?Angata? not only showed the children how to use African drums and other percussion instruments to create the distinctive rhythms, but also demonstrated African dancing and singing. By the end of their sessions, Angata had not just the children but many of the parents joining in. At the same time, in the sun-filled classrooms of the Mount House Pre-prep Department, other children were learning paper craft ? including making and decorating face-masks and crowns ? painting portraits and trying their hand at Mexican cooking, as well as playing a range of games. Mrs Julia Hallinan, Head of Pre-prep was so delighted with the response that the school now plans to make the activity morning a regular event. Mrs Hallinan said: ?It really was a morning of great entertainment and fun. ?Apart from introducing the children to some new activities, it gave new parents a chance to meet our teachers and the parents of many existing pupils.?
