TAVISTOCK'S own Stannary Brass Band will be playing a concert to raise much-needed funds for the refurbishment of the United Reformed Church in Russell Street, Tavistock.
An evening of varied light music will be in store at the church from 7.30 pm, next Friday, May 17.
The proceeds will go towards the church building's major refurbishment which will be undertaken over the next five years and is expected to cost more than £40,000.
The church was erected in 1836 by the Methodists and was purchased by the Congregational Church when their large building in Brook Street was demolished in the early 1960s.
It became the United Reformed Church in 1972 when the Presbyterian Church and the Congregational Church united.
Despite regular maintenance, the exterior rendering, roof and windows need attention. Access for the disabled is also required to meet new regulations which come into force in 2004.
The Rev Roger Cornish said: 'We hope the people of Tavistock will help us keep the building in good condition by supporting the concerts and other events at the church.'
The church's recent pet service event was a success, although Mr Cornish said there had been room for many more pets and their owners. Mrs Sheila Hurst from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf gave a presentation on the charity's work and a collection was taken for this worthwhile cause.
Tickets for the Stannary Brass Band concert cost £4, which includes a programme, and are available from Book Stop in Market Street. There will be a raffle and refreshments will be on sale.
