A PROJECT to allow a group of Tavistock College students to take part in next year?s Tall Ships? Race looks likely to receive a pre-Christmas boost. Sarah Parr, a youth support worker, contacted Tavistock Town Council to see if members would consider helping students from Tavistock College, following their successful Tall Ships Getaway project last year. Sarah told councillors: ?It was very rewarding and we all worked really well as a team. The owner of the boat was so pleased she has offered us the opportunity to sail her boat in a leg of the Tall Ships Race 2005.? Sarah said it was an exciting opportunity for the students ? but £7,200 was needed to pay for the trip. She said it had been decided to raise the money for the trip as a team, as the students came from a wide variety of financial backgrounds. To date, £1,200 had been raised. Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the town?s properties committee, said: ?I think it?s an admirable thing, particularly bearing in mind it?s accessible to everyone. I would love to support it.? Cllr Norma Woodcock reminded the committee that the council regularly gave grants to the town?s twinning association. ?I would like to offer them £100 ? I think the principle is as important as the actual amount itself,? she said. The committee agreed £100 should be forwarded to the Tall Ships project ? the decision was due to be ratified by the full council on Tuesday.
