LET battle commence was the cry ringing out from the Charter Hall last Friday as the 2011 Okehampton Battle of the Bands kicked off with the first heat.
The first seven bands hit the stage with passion, energy and talent, offering an eclectic mix of music.
In a closely fought contest, four-piece indie band Backbench Rebellion were announced as the night's winners.
The band, who take their influences from bands such as Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys, impressed the judges with their original material, confidence and energy.
In joint second were the Devil Riders, and MIU. Judges were impressed with the quality of performances throughout the night, and a great night's entertainment was had by all.
Event organisers Chris Hodgson and Dan Rose said: 'This has been a fantastic start to the competition — 2011 is going to be great for the Battle of the Bands.'
In the build-up to the Party in the Park finale on August 13, jointly sponsored by Steven's Estate Agents and the Plymouth Inn, the second heat takes place on Friday July 29, with another seven bands performing.
Two bands from Okehampton — the Monkey Gland Blues and the Situation — will be representing the town at the event, and would love some local support.
The music starts in the Charter Hall from 7.30pm, with a licensed bar thanks to the Plymouth Inn.
